Dear Bobcat Families & Staff,
It’s National School Counseling Week and I wanted to start this message off by acknowledging how much I appreciate our Hempstead ISD Counselors. Their tireless efforts are pivotal in ensuring the well-being, academic success, and bright futures of our students. School counselors are instrumental in our education system, collaborating with teachers and administrators to equip our students with the essential tools for their comprehensive academic achievements. Join me in giving them a big Bobcat Thank You!
Many of you may have noticed our news stories highlighting high school students receiving industry certifications across various disciplines. It is crucial that every student graduates from Hempstead High School equipped with the skills necessary to reach their fullest potential, whether they are preparing for success in college, a career, the military, or life in general. With many of our students entering career fields immediately after high school, it is our responsibility to prepare them adequately. The state of Texas mandates that students be College, Career, or Military ready upon graduation, and our high school team is diligently ensuring that our students meet these standards. Let’s celebrate the achievements of our students who are earning certifications through our various pathways.
In our mission to enhance career readiness, it's equally important to ensure that all students are advancing academically. Hempstead ISD has made significant academic progress, yet there is more work to be accomplished. Parents, I encourage you to engage with your children about their school day by asking specific questions such as:
What was the most interesting thing you learned today?
What questions did you ask in school today?
Was there something you wanted to learn more about?
What subject did you enjoy the most, and why?
What are you looking forward to learning tomorrow?
These questions are an effective way to connect deeply with your child about their curriculum. Engaging with your child’s teacher about their learning is also beneficial. The collective effort to promote our students' growth will significantly enhance their learning outcomes.
Within the Hempstead ISD Profile of a Learner, we aim for all students and graduates to become critical thinkers and effective communicators. I encourage you to discuss these aspects with your child, exploring how they are developing critical thinking and communication skills through their education.
Our high school has kicked off softball and baseball season, and I encourage all members of our community to get out and catch a game when you have time. Always check our website for athletic schedules for a fun night out at a game to support our students. Thank you for partnering with us as we go to #HigherHeights together.
With Bobcat Pride,
Herbert O’Neil
Superintendent
Hempstead ISD
