March 28, 2025

Dear Bobcat Families & Staff,

It’s officially springtime, and that means our students are in full swing with a variety of extra- and co-curricular activities. I remember when I was a high school principal, how easy it was to lose track of how many things our students were involved in. That’s part of what makes public schools in Texas so incredible, students have the opportunity to participate in the things they love.

Watching our students perform and compete at a high level is always a joy. This week, I witnessed and heard some amazing things happening both on the field and on the stage.

Our softball team picked up a big district win! I’m incredibly proud of our girls for coming together and earning this victory. Coach Lise DeBruin and her coaches are doing a great job, and I know the team will continue to push hard this season.

Our baseball team also had a huge win against district rival Brazos. While they’ve had several impressive wins this season, this one stands out…they came from behind and defeated one of the best teams in the district. You can hear more about that game in my #HigherHeights Broadcast, where I spoke with Brayden Diiorio about the experience.

Our Hempstead High School Beta Club students represented us well at the Senior State Convention in Grapevine, TX. Several students advanced to the National Convention, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, in June. Thank you to the Beta Club sponsor, Christine Herbert and all the students who competed well.

Our middle school band made history, earning a UIL Sweepstakes Award for the first time! I want to congratulate our student musicians and their directors for preparing at such a high level. Recognizing them at our recent Board meeting was a proud moment. The future of our band program is bright.

Our UIL One Act Play was victorious once again at the Bi-District Competition, hosted right here in Hempstead. Our students received first place and earned a 1st rating from each judge. We’re cheering them on as they head to the Area Competition in Crosby on Friday, April 11.

Additionally, our Early College High School will welcome its next cohort of students in the 2025–2026 school year. We are proud of our inaugural class, who are almost finished with their first year. They’re doing well, and we’re excited about their continued growth through this innovative program.

Preparing for STAAR Testing

STAAR testing begins in April across the district. We recognize this season can bring anxiety for students, staff, and you as parents and guardians. Please know that our students and teachers have been working incredibly hard to prepare. While we want them to perform at their best, we also understand that STAAR is just one measure of a student’s performance.

Many parents ask how they can support their children during testing season. There are many ways you can help beyond just knowing the content.

Here are some simple ways to support your student during STAAR testing:

  1. Ask about their day and what they’re learning
“What did you learn today?” can go a long way in helping students reflect.

  2. Encourage consistent sleep routines
A well-rested brain is a focused brain. Try to maintain a steady bedtime.

  3. Make sure they eat breakfast
Fuel matters — whether at home or school, breakfast helps them stay alert.

  4. Create calm mornings
Avoid rushing or stress before school. A peaceful start sets the tone for the day.

  5. Remind them to try their best — not to be perfect
STAAR is important, but effort and confidence matter most.

  6. Limit screen time the night before
Encourage rest and winding down before bed to help them recharge.

  7. Celebrate effort
Praise their hard work and persistence; a simple “You’ve got this” goes a long way.

  8. Reach out if you need help
If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the campus. We’re here to support you.

Bond Progress & Construction Updates

Many of you have noticed the progress at Bobcat Stadium. The turf looks incredible. Once the track is lined, we’ll be ready to fully utilize the space. We’re planning to hold a ribbon cutting event. More details will be shared soon.

Thank you to everyone who attended our recent Brick by Brick Bond Update Meeting. We will continue to host these to keep you informed about the progress of our bond projects. We’re especially excited to begin construction on the new Hempstead Early Childhood Center in early June.

Thank you for your continued partnership with Hempstead ISD. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve your children and this incredible community. Let’s keep working together as we move to #HigherHeights together.

With Bobcat Pride,

HOneil
